Advection of Methane in the Hydrate Zone: Model, Analysis and Examples
نویسنده
چکیده
A two-phase two-component model is formulated for the advective-diffusive transport of methane in liquid phase through sediment with the accompanying formation and dissolution of methane hydrate. This free-boundary problem has a unique generalized solution in L; the proof combines analysis of the stationary semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem with the nonlinear semigroup theory in Banach space for an m-accretive multi-valued operator. Additional estimates of maximum principle type are obtained, and these permit appropriate maximal extensions of the phase-change relations. An example with pure advection indicates the limitations of these estimates and of the model developed here. We also consider and analyze the coupled pressure equation that determines the advective flux in the transport model.

Analytical theory relating the depth of the sulfate‐methane transition to gas hydrate distribution and saturation
[1] We develop a theory that relates gas hydrate saturation in marine sediments to the depth of the sulfate‐ methane transition (SMT) zone below the seafloor using steady state, analytical expressions. These expressions are valid for systems in which all methane transported into the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) comes from deeper external sources (i.e., advective systems). This advective co...
متن کاملPrediction of Structural Changes in Gas Hydrate for Methane and Ethane Mixture by Using Tangent Plane Distance Minimization
Abstract: Â In this study, the change in the crystalline structure of gas hydrate was predicted for ternary mixture of methane-ethane-water. For this purpose, the tangent plane distance (TPD) minimization method was used. First, the calculations were performed for the binary mixtures of methane-water and ethane-water as the gas and liquid phases. The results show that for a binary mixture of th...
متن کاملNew insights into the transport processes controlling the sulfate-methane-transition-zone near methane vents
Over the past years, several studies have raised concerns about the possible interactions between methane hydrate decomposition and external change. To carry out such an investigation, it is essential to characterize the baseline dynamics of gas hydrate systems related to natural geological and sedimentary processes. This is usually treated through the analysis of sulfate-reduction coupled to a...
متن کاملA Fugacity Approach for Prediction of Phase Equilibria of Methane Clathrate Hydrate in Structure H
In this communication, a thermodynamic model is presented to predict the dissociation conditions of structure H (sH) clathrate hydrates with methane as help gas. This approach is an extension of the Klauda and Sandler fugacity model (2000) for prediction of phase boundaries of sI and sII clathrate hydrates. The phase behavior of the water and hydrocarbon system is modeled using the Peng-Robinso...
متن کاملModeling of Methane Hydrate Decomposition by Using Chemical Affinity
In this work, experimental kinetics data of methane hydrate decomposition at temperatures ranging from 272.15 to 276.15 K and at pressures ranging from 10 to 30 bars were modeled by using chemical affinity. This model proposed a macroscopic model which is independent of any intermediate mechanism like heat or mass transfer. The results show there is good agreement with experimental data. Al...
